Introduction
Recently, as the Fourth Industrial Revolution based on big data has emerged as a major socioeconomic interest, universities across the country are actively establishing data science-related departments. However, when examining the data science departments currently being newly established and operated at major domestic universities, they are skewed toward securing technical capabilities for data processing and manipulation primarily from a science and engineering perspective, and many of these departments are mainly affiliated with science and engineering fields (especially colleges of engineering).
Due to these characteristics, even if students in the humanities and social sciences are interested in data, they often hesitate to choose a major in data science because they feel burdened by their unfamiliarity with mathematics, statistics, and computer programming. Furthermore, since the mainstream curriculum for data science is centered on science and engineering, the reality is that it is still difficult to find educational programs that integrate business knowledge and approaches from a humanities and social sciences perspective into data analysis.
The Dept. of Data Science at Incheon National University stems from this recognition of the problem. Specifically, it will provide a curriculum differentiated from other schools and departments by focusing on how to apply data science to corporate management, based on domain knowledge of specific areas of business administration such as marketing, finance, human resources, accounting, international business, and management science. Through this, the department aims to cultivate competitive talents who possess data-driven analytical capabilities and apply them to corporate management, not only among students in science and engineering but also in the humanities and social sciences.
