Incheon National University’s Institute for Science-Gifted Education (Director: Professor Kisoon Han of the Dept. of Creative Human Resource Development) announced that, as part of its "Science-on-the-Go" program, it successfully operated a “Mobile Science Education Experience Program” at the 1st Jemulpo Renaissance International Marathon held on May 4 at the Sangsang Platform near Incheon Station.
This program was designed to spread scientific culture to marathon participants and citizens through hands-on booths that combined sports and science.
A total of 51 people participated in the pre-registered 5km marathon course, and many citizens also visited the three science experience booths set up on site. Participants ran together with students from the Department of Sports Science at Incheon National University, learning about pace control and safe running techniques, thereby experiencing a healthy marathon culture. Following the run, participants enjoyed science activities at the booths, including “making a respiratory and circulatory system model,” “creating an electrolyte beverage,” and “crafting a blood type bracelet,” spending a special time where science and sports came together. Approximately 200 citizens in total took part in the program, enjoying both the fun of science and the thrill of sports.
Professor Kisoon Han, director of the INU Institute for Science-Gifted Education, said, “It was very meaningful to introduce the joy of sports science to residents and youth in the old downtown area,” adding, “We will continue to expand science culture programs that are truly engaging for Incheon citizens.”
The INU Institute for Science-Gifted Education is operated with funding from the Science and Technology Promotion Fund and the Lottery Fund, and is supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity. As an outcome of the “Living Science Classroom” program, it contributes to the advancement of science and technology in Korea and the welfare of low-income and marginalized groups.
The Institute for Science-Gifted Education runs a variety of projects such as the “Incheon Science Culture Center,” “INU Cyber Gifted Education Center,” “Living Science Classroom,” “Friday Science Touch Incheon,” and “Gifted Nurturing.” Details on all programs and events can be found on the official website (http://www.inuisge.kr) and on social media.
