Professors from the National Incheon National University (President: Park Jong-tae) Haksan Library Great Books Center (hereinafter referred to as INUGB Center) visited the Annapolis campus of St. John's College in the United States from January 13 to 17, 2025, to expand the foundation for international educational cooperation projects between the two universities and deepen teaching and learning capabilities.
Professor Lee Yong-hwa and Hwang Seung-hyun (Incheon University's Department of English Language and Literature) and Professor Lee Sang-won (Incheon University's Department of Ethics Education) met with SJC President Nora Demrightner, Senior Advisor for Foreign Cooperation Emily Langston, former and incumbent dean, graduate school principals, and tutors (professors) from the Education Committee to discuss the contents and methods of future student and teacher exchange activities based on the business agreement signed in November 2023 and May 2024.
As a result, in the fall semester of 2025, one tutor at St. John's University will teach regular courses at Incheon National University for one semester, and during the same period, one professor at Incheon National University will mutually dispatch teachers to teach seminar classes at the Annapolis campus of St. John's University, which is widely known at home and abroad for its "Great Books" convergence education, is the first time that teachers have exchanged each other.
During the visit to St. John's University, professors at Incheon University's GB Center attended first-year seminars, Greek classes, second-year music classes, and third-year science experiment classes to strengthen educational capabilities and had the opportunity to speak with tutors and students.
St. John's University's curriculum research and class observation are expected to be of great help to the curriculum and design of various liberal arts classes at Korean universities in the future.
In addition, they held a briefing session on the Korean GB education program and the global GB camp project in Chuncheon for members of St. John's University. About 20 undergraduate students participated in the briefing session of the project, which is scheduled to be held as part of the Chuncheon Special Education Zone Project for a month in July 2025 in cooperation with the Korea Great Books Education Research Center and the Incheon National University GB Center, established by teachers from Chuncheon University.
In addition to professors from Incheon National University, Hallym University, and Kangwon National University, three tutors and six students from St. John's University will participate in the seminar during the project.
In a separate briefing session for tutors, Santa Fe campus teachers, in addition to Annapolis teachers, participated via video to confirm St. John's University's keen interest and willingness to cooperate with Korea's GB education program, which began at Incheon National University and expanded to Chuncheon.
Meanwhile, teachers from Incheon National University GB Center held a winter joint workshop with teachers from Korea's Great Books Education Research Center at Hallym University and Commons Field (innovative cultural space) in Chuncheon for two days from January 23-24, 2025, to discuss their achievements and future development plans.
In particular, in 2025, in addition to the university's curriculum and comparative programs that have been developed since 2019, the GB program, a classic and prestigious-based reading discussion education, will be applied to the regular high school liberal arts course at Samsan High School in Incheon and Hwacheon High School in Hwacheon County, which have recently been selected as self-employed. This is interpreted to mean that much of the competence of Incheon University GB Center will be devoted to spreading discussion-based reading and essay education based on non-competition and cooperation in the field of secondary education and teacher training.
